5 Questions to Ask Your Potential Branding Designer Banner

I’ve noticed that when clients come to me and want a new logo or any branding work done, there’s a little bit of mystery in what information they will need from me to know I’m a good fit for them as a designer. Spending your hard-earned money on a logo or branding can seem like a HUGE investment for you and your business. If you find the right designer the process should feel effortless. Here’s a couple of tips on what questions you should be asking designers and a big ol’ red flags to watch out for.

First, the good stuff!

Here’s a 5 great questions clients have asked in the past and I would LOVE to be asked more, as a designer:

  1. What should I know about you and the way that you work?

  2. Can you walk me through an overview of your creative process?

  3. What should I expect as a finished product?

  4. Will you work with me to get my brand materials printed? Do you know a good printer?

  5. What information do I need to provide to you to get the logo that best fits my needs?

Now, here’s some Emily-patented red flag realness:

Your designer is offering a professional service. Therefore, the following details should be discussed up front, either in the initial call or as a followup to the initial contact:

  1. Pricing - ballpark estimate or range and how the designer bills

  2. Availability - when the designer can start and an average project length

  3. Process - overview of the whole process outlined from kickoff to final product deliverables

  4. Contracts - Statement of Work details and when you should expect official documents

If you find that you are having to pry for that information or it is not being offered to you, you probably don’t want to work with that designer. All those points are integral to the client-designer relationships and keep us all happy and on track!
